Los Cabos, (the capes), is 900 miles south of San Diego. The Tropic of Cancer crosses the peninsula 50 miles to the north. The two main tourist areas of Los Cabos are Cabo San Lucas (Cabo), and San Jose del Cabo (San Jose). A two-lane paved highway traverses the entire peninsula, from Tijuana, to Los Cabos. The permanent population is approximately 110,000, with over one million visitors a year.

CABO SAN LUCAS
Cabo San Lucas is at the tip of the peninsula, where the Sea of Cortes (Gulf of California) and the Pacific Ocean meet. Its famous stone arch, El Arco, is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world. Famous for world-class sportfishing, the annual billfish tournaments award hundreds of thousands of dollars in prizes. The heart of Cabo is its marina; the home of sports fishing fleets, luxury yachts and boats for tours and cruises. It is also known for water sports, shopping, dining, and a vibrant nightlife.

SAN JOSE DEL CABO
Smaller and quieter than Cabo, San Jose is just nineteen miles northeast. San Jose is the seat of government for the municipality and has an appealing downtown of tree-lined streets, a large main plaza, and a picturesque twin-spire church. Water sports are also popular in San Jose and and the reef at nearby Cabo Pulmo is the most northerly coral reef in the Eastern Pacific. There's plenty to do on land as well; rent a car and explore the East Cape and the Sierra de la Laguna range. A Corridor of resort Hotels, beaches, and championship golf courses wind along the magnificent coastline between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.

AIRPORT
The Los Cabos International Airport is 7 miles north of San Jose del Cabo. Alaska, American, Mexicana, Delta, Continental, America West, AeroMexico, AeroCalifornia, and Aero Calafia all service the area.

WEATHER AND CLIMATE
The weather in Cabo San Lucas is almost always warm and sunny, with very low humidity. Temperatures vary only slightly through the year with highs in the mid-to-upper 90s in the Summer, mid 80s in the Spring and Fall, and mid 70s in the Winter. It rains less than 10 days a year on averageand the average annual rainfall is just a little over 10 inches, falling mostly in September. January and February are The coolest months, August and Septermber the warmest. Water temperature, even in the winter, rarely dips below 70 degrees F. The Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula is generally 10 degrees cooler, year round, than the Sea of Cortes.

Baja California Sur is on Mountain Time.

MONEY
The currency is the Mexican Peso. Dollars can be exchanged at booths and at hotels at a slightly lower rate than banks. Banks are open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. or later, and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Some do not exchange travelers checks. Ask before you queue. Shops and restaurants accept dollars, but the rate may be lower than exchange booths and banks. Both towns have ATMs and American Express offices.

GETTING AROUND
Taxis and car rental agencies can be found at the airport, major hotels, and in both downtown areas. A valid driver's license and credit card are required to rent a car, and you must be 21 years of age or older. SuburCabos and InterBaja buses run approximately every half hour from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. between Cabo and San Jose with stops in between.

LANGUAGE
Spanish is the offiial language, but English is widely spoken. knowing a few Spanish words like please (por favor) and thank you (gracias) will be invaluable.

TIPPING
Tipping is usually 15% of the bill at restaurants and bars. Bellboys, taxis, maids, etc., are tipped depending on the service. In restaurants, it's considered poor manners to present the check until it's requested. Ask for "la cuenta, por favor" and your bill will be delivered to you.

SIESTA
Taking a siesta (afternoon rest) is a Mexican tradition. Some businesses and offices close from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. (more often in San Jose) reopening again 7 p.m. or later.

MEDICAL SERVICES
Both towns have modern hospitals and good medical and dental facilities. There is a decompression chamber in Cabo San Lucas.

SAFETY
Los Cabos has a very low crime rate and is very safe. Do not take valuable to the beach, however, and keep rental cars locked. In the event of an emergency, dial 060.

WATER
Los Cabos' water supply is piped from aquifers in the Sierra de La Laguna. All major hotels and restaurants have purified water. When in doubt, ask for bottled water.

COMMUNICATIONS
All major hotels have long distance services. Check rates before placing a call. Internet cafes and cellular phone providers are in both towns. The country code for Mexico is 52. The area code for Los Cabos is 624. Calls within Cabo San Lucas, and San Jose del Cabo are local calls with seven digit numbers. To make a collect call dial 090 for the bilingual International Operator.

Most cell phones from the U.S. and Canada may be programmed for local use through Telcel and Telefonica MoviStar, the local carriers. To dial a cellular phone from a land line or another cellular, use the prefix 044-624, then the seven digit cellular number: 044-624-148-9999.
